don't [ he sends it before he means to, shaking his head down at his device. he should know when to leave things be with tetora but he can't. not when the boy is resolved to dying. that won't happen - not on his watch. ]

[ this makes his chest ache in a way that he's not sure he understands. tetora can't breathe. ]

[ he can't think about that. not after what he'd just been through with billy. tetora is probably right, one of them will fuck up and he'll have to make a hard call. except he knows even now that he'll probably make the wrong one if it means tetora lives. ]

[ he doesn't want to put frank in a position where he'd have to make a tough call when it comes to him. he's been through enough, the two of them have been through enough - neither of them need something like that at this point in their lives. ]

[ she thinks about how disconnected mike has been since eleven disappeared, how much he'd pulled away from school and his family. eleven has disappeared here, too, and he hasn't done that. he's done this — fight club, a monster guide, and a house with will. it's honestly moving, so much so that she scrubs a hand over her face to stop any emotion from spilling over.

frank's voice startles her back to the present. she hadn't realised they could speak in hear, but of course they can. right. ]

[ after a long moment, she speaks quietly. ] Mike wasn't — he wasn't doing well when we were home, y'know. [ because of eleven and the upside down and her parents not getting it at all. she swallows then, looking down before her face betrays her worry or frustration with the world before now (with how little she paid attention to her own brother). when she looks up again, her voice lifts. a little louder. firmer, too. ]

And this [ she throws her hands up, gesturing at the room around them. ] is impressive.

Everyone from Hawkins remembers different things except me and Steve.
Well, not different exactly, but we remember more, like we're from the future.
Do you know why that would be?

[ she types "a friend" in brackets beside steve and then deletes it. it shouldn't matter who he is!! ]

[ frank nods, having gathered that especially with conversations with mike from the early days. he was so happy to have eleven here, and then she left and will came. he's nearly... flourished, really. in a place that should be beating him down. he's proud of that kid, moreso than any of the others not that he'd ever play favorites with them. mike was here with him since day one and he was the first one who got frank to open up. and now his big sister is here and a part of him worries that he'll lose the bond they'd forged. his expression might dull visibly as a result. ]

He wanted to learn to fight, so I started building somewhere safe. Then it turned out a lot more people wanted to learn, or just train. Spar, that sort of thing. You're welcome by any time. Don't let Mike tell you otherwise. [ like he had tried with max. frank goes to a weapons chest at the juncture between the workshop and fight club, opening it with a key from his pocket. he pulls out a long, jagged knife and moves to hand it to her, hilt first. ]

Here. I'll show you how to sharpen it and use it, if you want. [ since apparently he's in the business of giving wheeler children whatever the hell they want. ]

[ he answers quickly despite any business. non-urgent usually means the opposite from his experience and he's never too busy for her in any case. ]

people that come here from the same world aren't always from the same time.
i don't have a why for you but it's just another thing to watch out for i guess

[ she considers ignoring the first part, but she knows mike will say something embarrassing about it at some point, anyway. she types “we used to date” and promptly deletes it. it’s stupid and irrelevant and frank’s not her dad and she wouldn’t even tell her dad that, jesus. ]

A guy about my age from the same school as all of us. He helped fight the Demogorgon and protect the kids.
Mike likes to tease me about him. It’s stupid.

[ okay, maybe she doesn’t want to seem vapid in front of frank. who wants to seem that way in front of anyone, huh?

frank’s answer assure her that the problem is normal, at least, even if they don’t know why it happens. she considers explaining just how far behind mike is, how will thinks he died horribly at the hands of his loved ones, and she can’t convince him otherwise — but those are her problems. the mayor has his own bullshit to deal with. ]

Mike remembers through Halloween. Max doesn't remember much more. Will remembers a little more.

[ she keeps it vague, when she doesn't know what the boys have told him and would hate to lose their trust over tattling. ]

But then Steve and I remember a lot of important things that happened after all that.
